So many of the stories scare me! I am currently switching from 300mg of Dilantin to 200mg of Lamictal XR. Here is some background: I am a 38 year old woman and have been on Dilantin for 23 years. I was started having seizures for no apparent reason when I was 14. I have grand mal seizures -- or HAD them.I'm on Lamictal for bipolar disorder. I was told that it works on a different neural pathway to benzos, so is unlikely to prevent WD seizures. Lamictal does seem to help with the crippling fear and agitation though. I've had many WD seizures, and was always off my meds during a binge, but I wouldn't rely on Lamictal or Seroquel to prevent them.Check with your doctor first, but one way of weaning off any medication is to take it 2nd daily for one week, then 3rd daily for 1 week & so on. This way is effective for most medications.
